Widow's Claim for Pension.

State of North Carolina, County of Beaufort, SS:

On this 2nd day of Dec, 1893, personally appeared before me a U. S. Com'r for the Eastern Dist of N.C. within and for the County and State aforesaid, Rosetta Crandall a resident of Washington in the County of Beaufort and State of North Carolina aged 69 years, who being duly sworn, according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension provided by Acts of Congress granting pensions to widows: That she is the widow of Ephriam Crandall who was a Private in Co., B, of the 35th Regiment of USC Col Vols in the War of 1861-5, that her maiden name was Rosetta Perry and that she was married sometime during year 1844 to the said Ephriam Crandall at Rosedale in the County of Beaufort and State of N. Carolina by Abram Allena colored minister after the manner & custom of slaves.

She further declares that the said Ephriam Crandall, her husband, died on the [left blank] day of Jan 1864, at Newbern or at Folley's Island in the State of S.C. of [left blank] which he contracted in the service, while in the line of duty. She also declares that she has remained a widow ever since the death of said Epherian Crandall and that she has not in any way been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the rebellion in the United States; and she hereby appoints W. H. Pender of Wash. Beaufort Co N.C. as her lawful Attorney, with power of substitution, and authorizes him to present and prosecute this claim. That the name, date of birth and place of residence of all the children of her deceased husband who were under sixteen years of age at the time of his death are as follows:

Also personally appeared Henry Bowen, residing at Washington and Chas Holland, residing at Washington, in the County of Beaufort and State of N.C., persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw the claimant, Rosetta Crandall, sign her name [or make her mark] to the foregoing declaration, and that they have every reason to believe, and do believe, from the appearance of said applicant, and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be, and know that said deceased recognized said applicant as his lawful wife, and that she was so recognized by the community in which they resided; and that they have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.
