Affidavit of Katy Wilson and Charity Powers, July 10, 1869

State of North Carolina | SS
County of Martin

In the matter of the claim for Pension of Dolly Crandell widow of Ephraim Crandell deceased, late Private in Company "B"35th Regiment U S Cold Troops Vols: [left blank]

Personally came before me, J J Smith J P in and for aforesaid County and State, Katy Wilson & Charity Powers citizens of the County of Martin, State of North Carolina, reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid claim, that the date of the birth of the children of said soldier is as follows:

Mozella Crandell was born August 15th 1855
Lewis Crandell was born October 23d 1856
Isabella Crandell was born October 9th 1860

That we with Claimant & children all belonged to the same master & lived on the same Plantation & were present when each of the above named children were born. On which occasions we rendered the assistance usual at such times. We know that the ages above given are correct from the fact that we not only remember the day of birth in each case, but also from the fact that the ages of said children have often been made a subject of conversation with us, which has enabled us to remember the same. And that we have frequently heard the said children give their ages which they can do with correctness, having been taught when quite young to do so, & they readily give the day, month & year they were born; which ages are recorded in a family Testament as given above which we have often seen & heard read

That we were present at the birth of the same in the capacity of assistants and have personal knowledge of the date as aforesaid from the facts above named.

We further declare that we have no interest in said claim, and are not concerned in its prosecution.
