Born in 1827, Samuel Vincent Niles was a Mexican War veteran (Captain in the Sixteenth Infantry) who later settled in Washington, D.C., where he was a respected and affluent attorney until taken ill in 1886. In the immediate post-Civil War years, he was retained by widows seeking to secure their pensions as well as by former Confederate sympathizers who needed to reaffirm their loyalty. He died on October 12, 1887.
